The opening of the Tokyo Hotaru Festival took place last week. To kick off the festivities took place an impressive display of 100,000 LED lights on the Sumida River nicknamed "Prayer Stars", the river seemed to be full of blue fireflies. The LED lights were provided by the company of Panasonic, which were designed to light up upon contact with water and run 100% by solar energy. There are many literary references that indicate that the Sumida River was home to thousands of fireflies. But in the 18th century popular hunting activity made the fireflies leave the area. Inspired by these stories and to raise awareness about alternative energy, made up the idea of making this show. After two days of illuminating a large stretch of the river there was the closing ceremony where the LEDs
were all caught in a large net .
Enjoy!!
